La Bibliothèque et salle d’opéra Haskell, située à Stanstead et Derby Line, à cheval sur la frontière canado-américaine, est un joyau patrimonial unique au monde qui dessert la population canadienne et américaine depuis 1901.


Aujourd’hui, la Haskell est directement touchée par le délire politique qui prévaut au sud de la frontière.


La bibliothèque doit engager des fonds importants pour aménager une nouvelle entrée du côté canadien de l’immeuble.


Un élan d'espoir

Au cœur de cette situation, des gestes de solidarité redonnent espoir.

  • La romancière Louise Penny a contribué 50 000 $ pour aider à défrayer les coûts de construction.


  • La Bibliothèque commémorative Pettes de Lac-Brome a également adressé une lettre de solidarité au conseil d’administration de la Haskell, signée par Jane Livingston, présidente du conseil d’administration.


Extrait de la lettre :


« Au nom du Conseil d’administration, du personnel et des membres de la Bibliothèque commémorative Pettes, je tiens à vous exprimer toute notre solidarité en ces temps difficiles. Tant de personnes aiment et apprécient tout ce que la Bibliothèque Haskell a représenté au fil des ans et sont attristées par la situation actuelle. Il n’est pas surprenant que la bibliothèque ait largement dépassé ses objectifs de collecte de fonds pour financer les “rénovations requises”. »


« La Bibliothèque Pettes souhaite ajouter sa voix à cet élan de solidarité. Comme tous vos donateurs et sympathisants, la communauté de la Bibliothèque Pettes croit fermement en la connaissance sans frontières et regrette sincèrement cet abandon des valeurs partagées. »

The Haskell Library and Opera House in Stanstead and Derby Line, straddling the Canada-U.S. border, is a unique heritage gem that has served both Canadians and Americans since 1901.


Now, the Haskell is directly affected by the political turmoil south of the border.


Due to new restrictions, the library must commit significant funds to renovate and create a new entrance on the Canadian side of the building.


A ray of hope

In the midst of this turmoil, gestures of solidarity are providing hope.


  • Novelist Louise Penny contributed $50,000 to Haskell to help defray construction costs.


  • The Pettes Memorial Library in Brome Lake also sent a heartfelt letter of solidarity to Haskell’s Board of Directors, signed by Jane Livingston, Chair of the Pettes Library Board.


Here’s an excerpt from the letter:


“On behalf of the Pettes Memorial Library Board of Trustees, staff and membership, I reach out to you in solidarity during these troubling times. So many people love and appreciate all that Haskell has represented over the years and are disheartened by the current situation. Not surprising that Haskell has far exceeded its fundraising goals in financing the required renovations.”


“Pettes Library wishes to add its voice to this resounding support.
Like all your donors and well-wishers, the Pettes community firmly believes that knowledge should know no boundaries and truly regrets the current departure from shared values.”
